Open Captioned Performances
This year the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust was able to add a new feature called Open Captioning to the 2012-2013 Broadway Season. Open Captioning involves a LED screen being placed to the left hand side of the stage. A professional operator scrolls through and, at times, ad-libs the script, depending on what is taking place on stage. Captioning is made possible for us from a grant by Theater Development Fund, a New York based theater organization dedicated to making the arts accessible to all. The service is designed to benefit deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing impaired patrons, but we are finding that a number of audience members with perfect hearing enjoy this added technology. We have a special section reserved for those requesting captioning, and it is to the left side of left center in the Benedum and on the left in Heinz Hall.
