Join us for a screening of Daughters of the Dust, presented in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Humanities Festival (a production of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and the Humanities Center of Carnegie Mellon University).

At the dawn of the 20th century, a multi-generational family in the Gullah community on the Sea Islands off of South Carolina – former West African slaves who adopted many of their ancestors’ Yoruba traditions – struggle to maintain their cultural heritage and folklore while contemplating a migration to the mainland, even further from their roots.

Daughters of the Dust was written and directed by Julie Dash, who is one of the collaborators on “Requiem for Rice,” a musical work part of which will be performed as a Humanities Festival preview event on February 22nd. Edda Fields, a historian at Carnegie Mellon University and author of the libretto for “Requiem for Rice,” will be speaking at the Festival on March 3rd.
