The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University School of Art, is excited to present an artist talk by Hock E Aye Vi Edgar Heap of Birds (Cheyenne and Arapaho b. 1954 Wichita, Kansas), a renowned contemporary artist.
Heap of Birds recently contributed to The National Museum, an evolving large-scale public art project by Jon Rubin (Professor of Art, Carnegie Mellon University) commissioned and presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust at 604 Wood Street in downtown Pittsburgh's Cultural District.
From March – June 2024, Heap of Birds, The National Museum of Broken Treaties was on view at 604 Wood Street. In response to his work, Suzan Shown Harjo (Cheyenne & Hodulgee Muscogee b. 1945 Oklahoma) wrote a response in the form of poem titled “Broken Treaties.” During the Three Rivers Arts Festival, and over the course of the four months, students from City Charter High School performed Harjo’s poem while standing outside The National Museum.
This artist talk is made possible with support from the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and Carnegie Mellon University. Special thanks to Chris and Dawn Fleischner.
