The overall theme is the natural movement of migration. These quilts go from the simple view of the natural migration of water and move toward a more complicated visual approach to a forced migration. The masked imagery complicates the vision of the original concept and becomes layered, overlapped and decorative. Everything gets lost in the movement of migration. In order to simplify so that we may understand, we need to look deep and mentally peel back the layers and explore the beginnings of the original water currents. Artist Tina Williams Brewer combines her vision with that of author John Edgar Wideman and poet Rachel Goldstein merging their artistic expression and leaving the viewer an opportunity to relate to their stories.
