The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Arts Education K-12 Residency programs are all custom created for the school/community we are serving. Residencies are led by professional teaching artists, can be in any art form, and have no requirement either for number of days or minimum number of students served. We intentionally design our programming to be accessible to, respectful of, and inclusive for all learners, from all ages, cultures, abilities, and perspectives. Find out more about our Arts Integration and Arts Enrichment programs below.

If you have any questions or to take advantage of these programs, call 412-471-6079 or email foster-shaner@trustarts.org. Interested in any of the programs below? Complete this brief interest form and we’ll follow up to discuss the details!

What:

Arts Integration is an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. Students engage in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject area and meets evolving objectives in both. - Kennedy Center

An arts integration residency is between 4-12(+) sessions with a Trust Arts Education Teaching Artist, meeting once or twice a week.

How:

Connected to Core Academic Content (Collaborative, Not Competitive)

  • The classroom teacher identifies a unit, theme, or content area that will benefit from an arts integration approach.
  • In planning sessions between Trust Arts staff, teaching artists, and classroom teachers, we connect the curriculum to an appropriate art form and identify the standards and objectives for both.
  • Regular communication and professional development throughout.
  • Final sharing optional but encouraged.

Why:

Research shows that arts integration practices foster deep learning of core academic content, encourage collaboration and creative problem solving, build social emotional learning, improve the classroom climate, and so much more!

When:

We can work with you to identify the days and times that work best for your teachers and students!

Some examples of effective arts integration pairings:

  • Astronomy + Dance = Dancing with the Stars
  • History/Social Studies + Photography = Bringing HIstory to Life
  • ELA + Theater = Adventures in Reader’s Theater
  • Math + Visual Arts = Abstract Art Meets Linear Functions

Trust Arts Education Teaching Artists are all professional artists working in their fields and have extensive experience in and out of the classroom. We engage in regular professional development to keep up with current trends and best practices related to arts enrichment and arts integration.

arts enrich

What:

Bring in a professional artist to share their craft with your students!

How:

Either a one-off workshop or residency of 4-12(+) sessions. We can plan the workshop or residency experience around the needs and interests of your students.

Why:

A unique opportunity for students to learn an art form from a professional artist in their community. Arts enrichment is especially useful for schools and after school programs that do not already have a permanent art or music teacher. In addition to learning an artistic craft, students will practice “soft” skills such as creativity, fine motor skills, social emotional learning, and collaboration.

When:

We can work with you to identify the days and times that work best for your teachers and students!

Some examples:

  • Drumming: West African, body rhythm, etc.
  • Theater and Drama: musical theater, creative drama, improv, etc.
  • Dance: capoeira, folklórico, modern, etc.
  • Visual Arts: mosaics, mobiles, batik, photography, pottery, painting, murals, etc.

OUR PROGRAMS WORK BEST WHEN:

  • We collaborate with classroom teachers to plan residencies, rather than compete for precious classroom time. At the end of a residency, we hope that teachers will feel excited and empowered to incorporate the arts into their curriculum themselves.
  • We engage with a school over a sustained period (2-3 years) to build buy-in and excitement with all grade levels and specialities.
  • We offer arts integration professional development opportunities for teachers and administration to foster a learning community around the approach.
  • We conduct regular assessments to understand the impact of our programs and how to improve them.

SOME OF OUR FOCUS AREAS:

  • STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and design, and math)
  • Social Emotional Learning
  • Culturally Responsive Pedagogy
